CURIOUS MUSIC FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE
70s library music. A kind of musical wormhole, wherein experimental music
could be made, issued in quantities of 200 and still get played 30 years
later. No wonder it¹s popular with Aphex Twin, David Holmes, Beck, Andy
Votel, Add N to (X), The Beta Band, Andy Weatherall, Coldcut and of course
Luke Vibert , who's compiled what is surely the most far out, quality
collection of Library Music ever released.
Painstakingly selected and restored from the libraries of Chappell, i M,
PIL and Southern ,this is not your usual kitsch nonsense. This is a
collection of super rare, deep fried warp funk, tripped out electronic
noodles, primitive techno and surreal pop a little like Luke¹s recent
Wagon Christ album 'Musipal', which has been racking up rave reviews by the
score.
Much of the music on this album was created at Ganaro studios in Versailles,
France by three men: Roger Roger, Nino Nardini and Eddie Warner ( aka Cecil
Leuter , Peter Bonello and Georges Teperino ). Like an earlier incarnation
of the Detroit holy techno trinity of Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan
Atkins, they created a new kind of electronic funk.
Working through the night in an amazing underground studio utilising home
made synths, distorted harpsichords, drums through moogs, spaced out
percussion and funked up bass they made music so ahead of its time that it
still sounds fresh. For proof check out the Squarepusher bass vibe of 'The
Bungler', the sci-fi lounge of Heinz Funk, the Sun Ra outness of
'Electronic track 15' or the bizarre folk concréte of The Johanna Group .
Marvel at how the music of yesteryear sounds like the music of tomorrow.
